Cappella Novocastriensis: Two German Requiems
Saturday 9th March 2019 7.30pm tickets prices and more details here
A note from Simon Lee, Conductor
Cappella are now well into preparing for our next programme: Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem and Schütz’s Musikalische Exequin. Having originally intended to perform the two works as whole units, I have taken the decision to combine the two mixing and matching them throughout the concert. The more work we did on the two, the more parallels I was finding between them. Whilst it is unlikely that Brahms was aware of Schütz’s work, they are remarkably similar in their selection of texts as well as their approach. The Schütz represents the first pseudo-requiem in the German language, and Brahms followed in these footsteps, knowingly or not.
The concert on March 9th promises to be exciting, we have a small baroque band using our own organ, to which we are adding theorbo and bass viol which will accompany the Schütz, and we are delighted to be able to use the new Kawai grand piano at Jesmond URC (which I had a brief play on last week) to accompany the Brahms. Our soloists are lined up, and we are delighted to welcome both Jessica Holmes and Robin Crinson back to sing with us again.
